Andrew Bright, DO

Dr. Andrew Bright is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, Mobile, Alabama. He also serves as a Critical Care and Burn Surgeon, and he directs the Burn Program at USA Health. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2000. He then completed his medical degree at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Lewisburg, West Virginia, where his passion for surgery began.

Dr. Bright began his surgical training with an internship at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he had the honor of caring for wounded soldiers, sailors, and Marines. He then served for two years as a U.S. Naval physician with the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, who were deployed twice to the Middle East. He completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in 2014, where he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in recognition of excellence in clinical care, compassion, and service. Following residency, Dr. Bright was recommissioned in the U.S. Navy and served as a general surgeon. During this time, he deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, where he worked in a multinational trauma hospital and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious service. Upon returning stateside, Dr. Bright completed a Surgical Critical Care and Burn fellowship at the  University of South Alabama Medical Center, with an emphasis in burn care.

Dr. Bright is board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care by the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, the American Burn Association, and the Southern Medical Association. He is also a certified instructor in several key trauma and burn education programs, including Stop the Bleed, Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET).

Dr. Bright, in addition to his burn-specific research, has participated in numerous trauma and critical care studies. He volunteers annually with the Christian Medical Ministry at Kibogora Hospital in Rwanda, where he works alongside PAACS surgeons and local staff, mentoring students and residents while learning with and from the Rwandan surgical team through close collaboration.
