Dr. Peter Holstege

Christopher Holstege, MD

Dr. Christopher Holstege is an Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics professor at the University of Virginia Professor School of Medicine in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is also the Chief of the Division of Medical Toxicology and the Senior Associate Vice-President of Student Health & Wellness. Dr. Holstege is a practicing emergency medicine faculty member who provides clinical care for poisoned patients at UVA Health. He is leading efforts in the care, health surveillance, and protection of all students at the University of Virginia, especially pertaining to student substance use. Dr. Holstege received his Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He completed his fellowship in Medical Toxicology at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Holstege is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. In addition, he is a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners. 

Dr. Holstege has numerous ongoing research projects in clinical, basic science, and epidemiologic arenas. Dr. Holstege has over 300 publications in various medical journals, periodicals, and books. He received the Calvin University Distinguished Alumni Award in 2022 and The Raven Award in 2021, given annually by the Raven Society to recognize excellence in service and contribution to the University of Virginia. In addition, he received the American Red Cross Christopher E. Lee Humanitarian Spirit Hero ward in 2021, which is given annually to a community member who exemplifies a humanitarian spirit and servant leadership. 

Dr. Holstege is married and has six children: Erik, Elijah, Benjamin, Samuel, Noah, and Annalee.
