Dr. Jonathan Lyons is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy & Immunology at the University of California San Diego (La Jolla, California) and Staff Physician in Allergy & Immunology at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Pomona College and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. Dr. Lyons completed his Internal Medicine residency and served as Chief Resident at UC San Diego, followed by a clinical fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID/NIH). Dr. Lyons is board-certified in Internal Medicine and in Allergy and Immunology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.
Dr. Lyons’ laboratory applies genetic and translational approaches to uncover mechanisms and pathways that drive allergic inflammation and hypersensitivity, with the goal of moving discoveries into first-in-human clinical trials. His work has been central to defining primary atopic disorders and includes the discovery and characterization of hereditary alpha-tryptasemia, which has reshaped the evaluation and diagnosis of mast cell disorders and hypersensitivity reactions. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed articles, contributed chapters to major textbooks (including Middleton’s and Wintrobe’s), and presented them widely at national and international meetings. Dr. Lyons has received numerous honors—among them a Lasker Clinical Research Scholarship, multiple NIAID Merit Awards, the Innovation in Research Award from The Mast Cell Disease Society, and the Young Physician-Scientist Award from the American Society for Clinical Investigation—and serves on committees and editorial review panels across the field, including leadership roles with AAAAI and a 2025 chair appointment to the AAAAI/ACAAI joint task force on practice parameters for mast cell disorders.
