Major Depressive Disorder - Diagnosis and Treatment (Psychotherapy & Medication Management)

This presentation on Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) provides an in-depth exploration of the diagnosis and treatment approaches, emphasizing both psychotherapy and medication management. It begins with an overview of MDD’s diagnostic criteria as defined in the DSM-5, highlighting key symptoms such as persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, and changes in weight or sleep patterns. The presentation emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive assessment to identify the severity of the disorder and potential co-occurring conditions. Treatment options are reviewed including evidence-based psychotherapeutic modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), which have proven effective in helping patients manage depressive symptoms and develop coping strategies. Other treatment options include pharmacological treatments, including SSRIs and SNRIs. Their mechanisms of action, potential side effects, and guidelines for monitoring and adjusting medication are discussed. The presentation concludes by underscoring the importance of an individualized treatment plan that integrates psychotherapy and medication, as well as ongoing evaluation and support to optimize patient outcomes in managing MDD. All physicians should attend this program.
