Sonia Sehgal, MD

Dr. Sonia Sehgal is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at the University of California, Irvine. She leads as the Assistant Chief and the Director of Medical Education for the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology. As a medical educator, Dr. Sehgal is a UC Irvine School of Medicine leader. She is the Director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship and a Deans’ Scholar. Dr. Sehgal earned her Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at UCI Medical Center. Dr. Sehgal cares for older adults to promote optimal living and empowered longevity at the UCI Health Senior Health Center in Orange County and UCI Health in Laguna Hills. Dr. Sehgal is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She specializes in the care and treatment of older adults.

Dr. Sehgal’s clinical interests include healthy aging, lifestyle medicine, hypertension, osteoporosis, preventive medicine, and elder abuse. She maintains some of the highest patient satisfaction scores at UC I Health. Furthermore, she has been honored as a Physician of Excellence by the Orange County Medical Association yearly since 2012, recognizing her commitment to providing quality geriatric care to the Orange County community. Dr. Sehgal received the Excellence in Teaching Award annually from 2008-2016 and the MVP Outstanding Service Award from the Office of Educational Affairs of UCI School of Medicine. Dr. Sehgal also received the Gold Star Award from the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

In her research and leadership, she oversees educational initiatives in federally-funded research initiatives. Over the past seven years, she has served as the Director of Curriculum for the UC Irvine Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP, HRSA). She educates the community physicians in the specialized care of older adults and oversees the geriatric curriculum for residents, medical students, and nursing students at UC Irvine. With passion and expertise, she is on the cutting edge of pedagogy nationwide, leading UCI’s GWEP Geriatric educational ECHO series on Age Friendly Health Systems utilizing the 4-M curriculum, What Matters Most, Mentation, Medication, and Mobility.
